Do I have to be a science major to get accepted into dental school? I'm a Biology major now but I'm thinking about changing my major to psychology because it's what I enjoy more but I still want to get my prerequisites for Dental school.

What is your study schedule like in dental school and do you still have time to socialize and interact with your friends? Is Meharry hard to get accepted into and do they award scholarships?

I heard that Meharry has a MHS program for students who were denied acceptance into the medical and dental program but Meharry still sees potential in them. Can you give me some information about the program like how long is the program, is it like undergraduate with a heavy load of science courses, does attending the program automatically give you a seat in dental or medical school and do you think the program helped benefited you now that you're almost done with your first year of dental school?

What is everyday life like at Meharry? Are the students and professors friendly and supportive? I live in Michigan so I haven't been to Nashville yet but I was always curious about how the city life is in Nashville, is Meharry close to downtown and are there shops and restaurants near by? Do you recommend living on campus or finding an apartment off campus?

Hey I was wondering what classes you had to take to get into Meharry and what GPA do you need? General Biology and/or Zoology with Laboratory 8 12 Inorganic Chemistry with Quantitative Analysis with Laboratory 8 12 Organic Chemistry with Laboratory 8 12 General Physics with Laboratory 8 12 Biochemistry 3 5 English Composition 6 9 Calculus or Statistics 3 5 I personally had a 3.4 GPA. I have heard GPAs range from 2.9 to 3.9 in my class it all depends on your application! They want well rounded students so if you have a low GPA you can make up for it by getting a higher then average DAT score. I would also advise looking into statistics for the schools you are applying to! - Dentist Bae

Yes Meharry has an MHS program (Masters of Health Science). I did the MHS program! The program was from Aug - April (9 months) with a one month christmas break The program is undergraduate heavy but also some new classes tailored to medical/dental school. Some classes include: Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Gross anatomy, microbiology,, pathology, genetics, molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, physiology. The program was course heavy they really want to see if you can excel with heavy course load. The program will give you a seat. you have to sign a contract and meet the requirements. Dental school requirements : 3.0 and 17 GPA Medical School requirements: 3.5 and a 395 I believe. The student are mixed in a class med and dent which is really fun. My class had 55 students. THIS PROGRAM WAS VERY BENEFICIAL! The first year dental class had a lot of the same classes. Almost all of the ones listed above so you have already seen all the material. (the prof sometimes used the same ppt) so you are ahead of the curve! Also you establish a great friend base which is great for studying! - Dentist Bae

No you don't!!! you just have to take the prerequisites for dental school thats all they look at and then your gpa! they suggest bio majors only because the course load is hard and similar to dental school so if they see you can handle that then you are likely to handle dental school. But most people who are non majors have way higher GPAS! Do whats best for you and what you enjoy you will do better that way! And a lot of the application process is based off numbers! - Dentist Bae

What is your study schedule like in dental school and do you still have time to socialize and interact with your friends? Is Meharry hard to get accepted into and do they award scholarships? I wish I could tell you what my study schedule is like but to describe it in one word it is all over the place! LOL. It depends but you are usually studying something EVERYDAY. you get into that routine really fast when you fail your first exam LOL. I personally do not study after I take an exam I take the night off as a reward (unless I have an exam the next day) and I usually take Fridays off and play soccer which I love doing or go out with my girlfriends. I personally have a cramming type of study schedule I feel like I learn better under pressure but the exams are back to back so its easy to fall behind but totally doable as you have a group of classmates doing it with u! Meharry I would say has lower requirements then some schools but every school is challenge to get into. I have classmates that got accepted the first time the applied, other students had to reapply 4 years in a row. But don't let that discourage you! They have several scholarships most of which are open to students once you are accepted! The administrations sends scholarships opportunities to us all the time! -Dentist Bae

I live in Michigan so I haven't been to Nashville yet but I was always curious about how the city life is in Nashville, is Meharry close to downtown and are there shops and restaurants near by? Do you recommend living on campus or finding an apartment off campus? Justin, Meharry is an amazing school. The definition of FAMILY. Everyone is friendly on campus and supportive especially just within your class which is so important! I am from Canada so I understand moving to a new city is a big jump! I lived in houston before coming to nashville and its definitely a downsize when it comes to city life but its honestly perfect for dental school because you don't get that much free time but when you do their are lots of close bars and clubs within 5 min drive to campus and GREAT places to eat in nashville!!!! Downtown is about 5 min away. I recommend living on campus. You are basically paying rent just to sleep you will spend your time studying wether its on campus, library or at home at a desk. i personally like being on campus because classes are 8-5 and I am not a morning person so those minutes I'm not spending in traffic are crucial especially after a long day or when you need to be studying! Also great for mid day cat naps! If anything I would suggest moving on campus for your first year to get a feel for the new city and school. - Dentist Bae

Hello can you tell me about the grad program with Megarry and how you got accepted? I don't think I mentioned this but I got a denial letter for the school of dentistry initially and then in that email it said HOWEVER you are being considered for the MHS program. Then I got a separate email that I was selected for interview then I got an acceptance letter for MHS. You cannot apply to the MHS program directly. You have to apply to dental or medical school and then be invited (based of potential they see in you but you probably had something in your application that was lacking). - Dentist Bae

Math is not my strong point. Physics and inorganic chem were challenging for me in school. With that, unfortunately I have an advisor that said I will not get far in the field unless I was good at math. Getting as far as you have, do you agree?
