Do the medical students and dental students interact with each other and are there some classes that you take together?

Is dental school extremely hard and how to you study? I'm entering my junior year of undergraduate and I have to admit that I don't have the best study habits but I would like to attend dental school. Are there any tips for studying and prepping for an exam? Do you have time to socialize and go out? Is dental school kinda set up like undergraduate where you take a certain number of hours and attend lecture?

Math is not my strong point. Physics and inorganic chem were challenging for me in school. With that, unfortunately I have an advisor that said I will not get far in the field unless I was good at math. Getting as far as you have, do you agree? I disagree! I feel like math is not used that much once you get to dental school. You just need to do what you need to do to pass the DAT to get there. Unfortunately math is on there. There is no physics only gen chem and ochem. I personally had no knowledge of ochem and didnt learn anything in college. I had to teach myself! I used chad videos and they were great!!!! I ended up getting a 19 on ochem! You can do it! - Dentist Bae

Do the medical students and dental students interact with each other and are there some classes that you take together? Hey Megan! So whats really cool about Meharry is that the first years are separate except for Gross Anatomy. The Dent class this year had 60 students and the meds had 110 I believe. So we have about 170 people in a big auditorium for gross anatomy lectures!!! We definitely interact many of my good friends are med students. Meharry has a great family atmosphere and I am so happy I chose to come here! Dental school is HARD. It is going to test you. So having good friends makes it so much better! - Dentist Bae

I personally did a masters program before I started dental school and that REALLY helped me realize how I need to study and that you CANT do it alone. There is just too much material. Honestly I feel like when you go to dental school you have to really adjust your study schedule from what you are use to so I wouldn't sweat it too much you will learn as you go! Dental school (at least first year) is basically like being thrown in a swimming people and learning out to swim! My advice is getting a good study group and trying to use each others strengths and weaknesses to get through material. You do have time to go out and socialize! I think I would go crazy if I didn't. They do the courses by hours. I think our semesters had 30-46 hours so as you can see thats WAY more then undergrad. -Dentist Bae

Hi, I'm a sophomore in college entering into my junior year next semester and I just now decided that I may want to pursue dentistry. I have always wanted to be a dentist in the back of my head but I didn't want to take all the prerequisites and I know that pursuing this dream may put me back for graduation and I would have to stay an extra year. I don't know what to do because I'm starting on my science classes late and this may not be the right move for me financially!

Are their any other careers you looked at while you were in undergraduate besides dental? I'm currently undecided at the moment about whether I want pursue Physician Assistant or Dentistry. I think both careers are great and of course both have their pros and cons! I know I should make up my mind soon because I'm entering my junior year and have to prep for either the DAT or GRE.

How many community service and shawdowing hours do you recommend for dental school? Jana, I don't think there is a magic number! I believe I had about 50. I know they just want to see that you have had SOME experience in a dental related setting. - Dentist Bae

You could always take a lighter semester and work while taking your pre-req or something like that! I wouldn't give up on your dream! - Dental Bae

Sarah Kate, It wasn't until Mid- Sophmore year did I even decide to want to do dentistry. I wanted to be a veterinarian but I volunteered at a clinic and realized it wasn't the career for me. I would suggest volunteering in both fields to see what you like better and talk to people! I didn't take my DAT until my last year of school so you have some time but definitely start looking into it! You could always take both tests and apply to both schools. -Dental Bae

I love following you on Instagram and seeing what an average day is like for a Meharry dental student. Meharry is my first choice for dental school and I hope I get accepted because being a dentist has been a life long dream of mine! What GPA and DAT score would you recommend to be admitted? Do I need to have shawdow or community service hours? How do you like Meharry and could you weigh the pros/cons? Are the students and professors friendly? I was looking at apartments and I really like Morena A and B but I was wondering should I apply early since more people are going to want to stay in the new apartments? Is it true that the first two years of dental school is extremely challenging?
